JPNATC wins eIndia 2010 jury's choice award

Dr Deepak Agrawal, Incharge IT, JPNATC and Mr Rohit, CEO, SM Telesys Ltd
received the award in Hyderabad

In a short span of one month, JPN Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS added another feather in its cap by winning the eIndia 2010 jury's choice award in mGovernance. Dr Deepak Agrawal, Incharge IT, JPNATC and Mr Rohit, CEO, SM Telesys Ltd received the award on behalf of AIIMS in Hyderabad.

Prof Misra, Chief of JPNATC said he was extremely happy with the performance of the IT department in JPNATC which has proved that government hospitals can provide leadership in IT in India. He added that the project has already proved successful at JPNATC and could be replicated all over AIIMS and other hospitals in India proving to be boon for patients.

Dr Deepak Agrawal, in-charge of IT and assistant professor Neurosurgery, JPNATC said that this is the second award won by JPNATC in applying IT for improving patient care and shows that IT is an integral part of today's hospitals and can significantly contribute towards efficiency, transparency, accountability and patient satisfaction.

Dr Agrawal explained that the project aims to streamline the process of hospital visits and minimize patient waiting times at JPN Apex Trauma Centre. It captures patient's mobile number in the EMR which is then verified by the telecentre during the first visit or at the time of admission. The telecentre gives the appointment for the patient based on the doctor's order in the EMR and confirms with patient through a voice call as well as by SMS. The solution also enables the telecentre to email the list of all scheduled patients to the medical record department of JPNATC, so that necessary files and OPD cards be taken out in advance. A final list of appointments is emailed on the day of OPD, copies of which are put outside each room and also with the concerned doctors.

Thanks to the initiative, the patients can now just flash their SMS with the token which is checked against the list present and a date stamp is put on the patient's OPD card. The patient goes to the designated doctor when his token is displayed on the screen outside the room. Following the visit, the telecentre makes a voice call to the patient to confirm whether the appointment took place and schedules the next appointment on the scheduling software so as to make it a perpetual cycle.
